The Learning Journey

ADI Part 1

The Theory Test

Multiple-choice questions

You have 1 hour and 30 minutes to answer 100 multiple-choice questions.

Before the test starts you’ll get:

  • instructions on how the test works
  • the chance to do some practice questions to get used to the screens

There are 25 questions in each of these 4 categories:

  • road procedure
  • traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
  • driving test, disabilities, and the law
  • publications and instructional techniques

A question and several possible answers appear on a screen. You have to select the right answer.

Hazard perception test

Before you start the hazard perception test, you’ll be shown a video about how it works.

You’ll then watch 14 video clips. The clips:

  • feature everyday road scenes
  • contain at least one ‘developing hazard’ – but one of the clips features 2 developing hazards

You get points for spotting the developing hazards as soon as they start to happen.

ADI Part 2

The Driving Ability Test

What happens during the test

There are 5 parts to the approved driving instructor (ADI) part 2 test:

  • an eyesight check
  • ‘show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions
  • general driving ability
  • manoeuvres
  • independent driving

How long the test lasts

The test takes around one hour.

Your general driving ability

You’ll have to show the examiner all of the following:

  • expert handling of the controls
  • use of correct road procedure
  • anticipation of the actions of other road users and then taking appropriate action
  • sound judgement of distance, speed and timing
  • consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users
  • driving in an environmentally-friendly manner

You’ll drive in varying road and traffic conditions, including motorways or dual carriageways where possible.

ADI Part 3

The Instructional Ability Test

What happens during the test

A Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) examiner will watch you give a client-centred driving lesson lasting about 45 minutes to one of your pupils.

Your pupil must drive for at least 40 minutes of the lesson.

At the start of the lesson, discuss the goals for the lesson and risk management with your pupil. This should take no more than 3 minutes.

At the end of the lesson, give your pupil no more than 3 minutes to reflect on their performance.

The examiner will look for evidence that you meet the national standard for driver and rider training.

What you’ll be marked on

You’ll be marked on 17 areas of competence that are grouped into 3 categories:

  • lesson planning
  • risk management
  • teaching and learning strategies

You ask, we answer

If you cant find an answer in our FAQ’s then just get in touch, we would be more than happy to discuss any questions you may have.

Typically, the learning journey from start to becoming a fully qualified ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) takes between 6 to 12 months, but training can be fitted around your current career commitments at a training pace that suits you.

Should you take out a franchise with us at Right Course Driving School, you could expect to be earning in around 4 months. This is dependent on how soon you complete your Part 1 and Part 2 training and qualification.

Earnings vary dependent on how many hours a week you wish to teach, but for full-time hours you could expect to earn approx. £40K +.

Many other driving schools will try to dazzle you with reduced training costs but when you dig a little deeper you will find there are hidden extra costs and contract clauses that tie you in, ultimately costing you more in the long run.

Here at Right Course, we offer industry leading training through our highly experienced and qualified training partners who offer a very competetive and transparent fee structure that can be purchased in manageable monthly payments.

Typically, a full training course will cost around £3,500.00, but remember you wont be charged this all at once and you have the option to earn while you’re still training.

Here at Right Course, we don’t believe in tying our team members into lengthy complicated contracts. You are free to leave at any time with a minimum one month notice.

Ready to make that change!
